Client and Program Overview
The University of Guam’s NASA Guam Space Grant (NGSG) has been a long-standing partner of 2cofly in advancing drone education and workforce development in Micronesia. Through NGSG’s student cohort initiative, participants receive structured training to prepare for the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification Exam and gain hands-on experience with drone operations.
Cohort 5 marked the third consecutive contract award to 2cofly, bringing together 13 students from diverse backgrounds. The program’s objective was to provide technical training that would enable students to achieve FAA certification while developing practical knowledge of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and their applications.

Training Scope and Curriculum
The Cohort 5 program combined classroom-style instruction, online resources, and hands-on training to cover:
FAA Regulations: Airspace classifications, flight restrictions, and remote pilot responsibilities
Airspace and Chart Reading: Sectional charts, controlled vs. uncontrolled airspace, and LAANC authorization
Weather and Performance: Meteorology, weather reports, aircraft performance, and risk management
Flight Operations: Pre-flight planning, emergency procedures, airport operations, and mission execution
Industry Applications: AEC surveying, environmental monitoring, photogrammetry, agriculture, and public safety
Training was supported through 2cofly’s proprietary Part 107 Online Learning Platform, which provided lifetime access to video lessons, quizzes, and practice exams, allowing students to reinforce knowledge outside of class.
Hands-On Training
In addition to theoretical instruction, Cohort 5 participants engaged in field training sessions. Students operated professional-grade drones and learned:
Flight controls and maneuvers in open-air environments
Mission planning and execution under real-world conditions
Safety procedures including emergency landing scenarios
Practical applications such as aerial mapping and data collection
This integration of theory and practice ensured students were prepared both for the FAA exam and for professional drone use cases.
Results and Milestones
Participants Trained: 13 students
Certification Outcome: 100% FAA Part 107 pass rate (first time achieved in NGSG program history)
Skills Gained: Airspace knowledge, safe flight operations, and applied drone technology training
Program Duration: Multi-week blended learning model with online and in-person sessions
The perfect pass rate, while a significant milestone, is only part of the outcome. The program also successfully strengthened Guam ’s pool of FAA-certified drone pilots, equipping students to support industries such as construction, engineering, environmental monitoring, and scientific research.
Significance
By completing the Cohort 5 program, students not only entered the growing drone workforce but also contributed to the larger vision of building regional capacity in advanced remote sensing and aerial data solutions.
For 2cofly, this project further demonstrates our ability to deliver high-quality drone training at scale, while tailoring instruction to meet the specific needs of students and organizations in Guam and Micronesia.
