Project Overview

2cofly partnered with NASA Guam Space Grant to train and certify Cohort 3 of college students in FAA Part 107 drone operations. This program was designed to equip students with professional drone piloting skills, providing them with FAA Remote Pilot Certification and hands-on flight training to prepare them for careers in aerospace, engineering, environmental science, and other technology-driven industries.

By integrating both classroom instruction and real-world drone applications, this training program empowered students with the technical expertise needed to operate drones safely, legally, and effectively in professional environments.

The Challenge

Many STEM students and aspiring professionals recognize the growing role of drone technology but lack access to structured training programs that lead to official FAA certification.

Key challenges included:

  • Limited access to formal drone education in the region

  • Ensuring students grasp both theoretical knowledge and practical flight skills

  • Preparing students to pass the FAA Part 107 exam with confidence

To address these challenges, 2cofly delivered a comprehensive training curriculum, combining self-paced online learning, in-person workshops, and hands-on drone operations.

Approach & Methodology

Comprehensive Part 107 Training

Regulatory Knowledge – Students learned FAA rules, airspace classifications, weather considerations, and flight operations.

Self-Paced Online Learning – A full online curriculum with 4K instructional videos, interactive quizzes, and practice exams ensured students could study anytime, anywhere.

Hands-On Flight Training

Real-World Drone Operations – Students received in-person flight training, learning pre-flight checklists, emergency procedures, and advanced maneuvers.

Mission-Based Exercises – Students applied their skills in mapping, aerial inspections, and data collection exercises, simulating professional use cases.

FAA Certification & Industry Readiness

Official FAA Part 107 Certification – Every student successfully completed the program, earning their Remote Pilot Certificate, qualifying them for professional drone operations.

Results & Project Impact

Expanding Career Opportunities

By earning FAA Part 107 certification, students gained a competitive edge in fields such as aviation, engineering, environmental research, and media production.

Practical Experience with Professional Drone Applications

The training extended beyond theory, providing students with real-world skills applicable to various industries, from scientific research to commercial drone operations.

Strengthening the STEM Workforce in Guam

Through the NASA Guam Space Grant partnership, this program helped build a pipeline of skilled drone pilots who can contribute to local and regional advancements in drone technology.

Conclusion

This collaboration between NASA Guam Space Grant and 2cofly exemplifies how structured drone training programs can empower students with the knowledge, certifications, and hands-on experience needed to excel in STEM and aviation fields.
