Yap Development | GHD x NAVFAC

Rapid terrain insights and planning data across 10 development sites

Client

GHD

Project Type

2D and 3D mapping

Location

Yap, FSM

Overview

GHD and NAVFAC are overseeing a development initiative in Yap that required fast, reliable terrain data across ten separate locations. Each site presented a different set of challenges. Some were wide open and relatively flat, while others were densely vegetated and difficult to access using traditional surveying methods.

To support early planning and feasibility, 2cofly was tasked with capturing accurate elevation, imagery, and terrain models that the engineering team could immediately use for assessment and design.

Execution

Our team mobilized to Yap and completed aerial LiDAR and photogrammetry surveys across all ten sites within 3 days. By relying on drone-based remote sensing, we were able to deliver consistent, high-resolution data efficiently, even in areas that would have required days of ground-based fieldwork.

Deliverables

  • 3D Colorized Point Clouds: Full digital twins of each site that show every visible surface feature.

  • 3D Ground-Only Point Clouds: Ground-filtered datasets ideal for modeling, planning, and engineering workflows.

  • 2D Orthomosaic Maps: High-resolution visual basemaps for clear interpretation of the terrain and surrounding environment.

  • Digital Elevation Models (DEM): Accurate elevation surfaces used for slope analysis, drainage studies, and early design decisions.

  • 1-Foot Contours: Detailed elevation lines that give planners a clear understanding of site shape and form.

  • Aerial Photos and Videos: Visual documentation of each site to support presentations, reporting, and stakeholder briefings.

Outcome

The combined datasets provided GHD and NAVFAC with a comprehensive understanding of each location’s terrain. This enabled informed decision-making at the earliest stage of the project and allowed the team to evaluate constraints, opportunities, and development considerations before proceeding to detailed design.

With this project, 2cofly continues to support regional infrastructure and development efforts, delivering fast, dependable geospatial data across Micronesia.
