2cofly Completes NASA Guam Space Grant Cohort 5 Drone Training Program

ree

This summer, 2cofly partnered once again with the University of Guam’s NASA Guam Space Grant (NGSG) to deliver our FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification Training to a new group of aspiring drone professionals. Known as Cohort 5, this year’s class brought together 13 students from different educational and professional backgrounds, all eager to gain the knowledge, skills, and certification needed to operate drones safely and effectively.

Throughout the program, students learned far more than how to pass a test. They developed a strong understanding of airspace regulations, flight safety, mission planning, weather analysis, and the real-world applications of drones in industries such as construction, environmental monitoring, agriculture, public safety, and scientific research.

Throughout the past few years, the team at 2cofly has been an outstanding partner for our UOG Drone Corps program. With our fifth cohort, they went above and beyond to guide students through the knowledge course ensuring that no one was left behind and that each member emerged as a confident and responsible drone pilot. What was especially inspiring was seeing a past Drone Corps member, Javier Garrido, return to lead the course and share his expertise with the next generation of our island’s drone pilots. - Keanno Fausto, NASA Guam Space Grant & UOG Drone Corps Communications Coordinator

About the Program

Cohort 5 followed our proven blended learning model, which includes:

  • Lifetime access to 2cofly’s proprietary online FAA Part 107 course with video lessons, interactive quizzes, and practice tests

  • Hands-on flight training using professional-grade drones and sensors

  • Small-group instruction that ensures every student receives personalized guidance

  • Real-world mission scenarios that prepare students for professional work in the field

This method is designed to go beyond exam preparation, equipping students to confidently plan, execute, and evaluate drone missions in various environments.

A Milestone Achievement

While every NGSG cohort has been successful, Cohort 5 reached an important milestone. For the first time in our work with this program, all 13 students passed the FAA Part 107 certification exam on the first try, achieving a 100% pass rate. The FAA exam is known for its rigor, covering controlled airspace, aeronautical charts, weather systems, and aircraft performance. Achieving a perfect pass rate reflects the continuous improvement of our curriculum, the commitment of our instructors, and the dedication of our students.

Why This Matters for Guam and Micronesia

Drones are now essential tools for mapping, surveying, inspection, conservation, and emergency response. Certified drone pilots provide significant value by improving efficiency, safety, and accuracy across sectors such as Architecture, Engineering, and Construction, marine science, and disaster management.

When I became a certified Part 107 pilot in 2019, there was no structured course to guide me. Information was scattered across blogs, PDFs, and YouTube videos, and nothing was available locally in Guam. That experience motivated me to create a program that puts everything students need into one place, with the added benefit of local support. Back then, Guam had maybe less than 10 certified drone pilots. Today there are hundreds, and I’m proud that 2cofly played a small part in growing that community. - Dong Won Lee, 2cofly President

Training local talent through programs like NGSG Cohort 5 strengthens Guam’s ability to adopt and apply drone technology for regional growth and innovation.
